African Baskets

Excellent sturdy foraging basket handmade in Ghana; some made by the Ojoba Widow’s Weaving Cooperative in the Sahel region and others by women in Bolgatanga in the Northeastern part of the country. These are also perfect to take to your Farmer’s market, carry a picnic or store household items.  The purchase of these baskets ensures that the women earn a fair wage for their work, enabling them to support themselves and their children.

The baskets are made from straw native to West Africa called “Elephant Grass” and the handles are wrapped in cruelty-free leather that is naturally tanned using local seeds and red millet.  Over 400 women are weaving these Fair Trade baskets, each in their own distinctive color combination, resulting in a unique basket.  Consequently, we cannot fulfill color requests but assure you a wonderful artistic expression.

Did you know… Fair Trade merchandise helps you make choices, with the confidence that your product is socially and environmentally sustainable.  The principle behind Fair Trade products is to strengthen communities by improving their nutritional needs, covering health care costs, empowering the poor, especially women, and mitigating environmental impact.

As a 1% for the Planet member, Terrafunga will donate a portion of your purchase to environmental organizations worldwide.
