Did you know… It was not until 1894 that the key chain was invented by Fredrick Loudin some 6,000 years after the first locks appeared in ancient Egypt and Babylon! Though keys in 704 BC were too large and bulky to carry on one’s person, the Romans designed smaller, lighter ones made of iron and bronze. Commonly known as the “skeleton key” this design remained virtually unchanged for 17 centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire!
In the 19th century, fobs were medallions tied to a ribbon, leather strap or chain that were attached to a pocket watch to help the owner retrieve it quickly from his pocket. With the growing popularity of watches, men’s waistcoats were redesigned adding small pockets to accommodate the time pieces and were appropriately called the “fob pocket”.
